Book Review: Scripture Scribbles: Cartoons From the Choir Loft by Phillip Dillman

I decided right away to like Scripture Scribbles right away when I saw the acknowledgments, which read “Jesus–For being a good sport.” Mr. Dillman’s sweet and engaging introduction also made me determined to enjoy these cartoons, and I certainly did.

The book is a compilation of cartoons that Dillman drew Sunday mornings during sermons while he sat in the choir loft. They range from being jokes that my father would make (the cartoon of Jesus eating Life cereal while in the tomb with the caption “The Resurrection and Life” comes to mind) to poignant images (a man in line returning a box containing the cross lamenting how he is undeserving of God’s “ultimate gift”) to my personal favorite–an image of the dove coming back to the Ark with a martini (“Apparently, the dove found more than an olive branch” remarks Noah. I rather like snarky Noah).

What I really loved about this book was the effort put in to finding the fun and joy in these stories in the Bible, as well as the visual representations of the word of God. Sometimes I think books like this tend to fail because they take themselves too seriously; in contrast, this book is a lighthearted and merry romp that illustrates some beautiful points of scripture while making the reader laugh out loud. With the holidays coming up, I think this book would be a great gift for pastors, as well as anyone who enjoys humor (I will be getting a copy for my father-in-law).
